Why is PVC pipe better than COPPER pipe?

Have you ever noticed the plumbing in your home? Are the pipes plastic (PVC) or COPPER? Many people do not noticed the plumbing in their home until something goes wrong. Even then it goes unnoticed until a plumber comes out and takes a look. Plastic (PVC) piping is becoming more and more common these days in residential and commercial homes, and not without good cause!! So is PVC pipe better then COPPER pipe? Plastic (PVC) piping has proven to be the better choice among plumbers, homeowners, and businesses alike.

Does PVC piping cost more than COPPER piping?

The first great reason that PVC pipe is the better choice over COPPER pipe is cost! PVC piping is becoming more and more inexpensive while COPPER prices are consistently on the rise. In fact, since the recession, businesses have filed more than 25,000 insurance claims from stolen COPPER piping last year alone. As for residential homes? Over 3 million residential homes have been affected by stolen COPPER.  Although insurance will take care of your costs, the problem of being without plumbing for a while still remains. If you have a leaky pipe or need plumbing work, it is suggested that you switch to PVC piping if COPPER is in your home.

Does PVC piping last longer than COPPER piping?

When it comes to PVC vs. COPPER many wonder how long it will last. Unlike PVC, COPPER is metal based. When water and air mix, corrosion will slowly take effect. Over time, the COPPER will completely disappear. Many times a small leak due to corrosion goes unnoticed until it becomes and huge leak and emergency services are needed.

Why is PVC piping ideal?

When it comes time for a plumber, no one wants to spend their entire day at home while the plumber is working on their pipes. PVC piping is easier and faster to fit than COPPER piping. This is due to the flexibility of the plastic (PVC). In many instances, it can take only 5 seconds to fix a PVC pipe as opposed to 40 seconds to fix COPPER piping.

Is PVC piping better than COPPER piping during the winter months?

Both PVC piping and COPPER piping can withstand the cold at a somewhat even level. However, the metal-based seems to attract the cold at faster rates and makes it stick around a little longer. This is another reason plastic is the preferred piping method. PVC piping is more durable and flexible and can expand far more than COPPER so it will not split as quickly or easily as COPPER.
