Simple Mistakes in Home Plumbing

As a home owner, you understand the challenges that come along with keeping everything up and running in your home. There is some amount of pride that comes with having your own home that you have worked to improve over the years. You have put blood, sweat and tears into making it yours. Owning your own home comes with all kinds of mishaps along the way, and one of those mishap areas in most homes is the plumbing.

Attempting simple fixes can sometimes lead to costly mistakes, mistakes in which the homeowner doesn’t realize that they are actually making the problem worse.

Common Home Plumbing Mistakes

Most plumbing mistakes are made through Do-It-Yourself (DIY) attempts with the wrong tools. Some are made through everyday use of your plumbing.

  • Using the Wrong Tools - Always use the correct tools for each specific plumbing problem. When it comes to plumbing, things can go pretty wrong if you use the wrong tool. A shoe heel is not a hammer, get it?
  • Flushing Garbage - It might seem convenient and easy at the time, but it is never a good idea to flush ANY garbage down the toilet.
  • Dumping Grease Down Drains - It might seem normal to dispose of hot grease down the kitchen sink drain, but that is a very wrong move. It is best to let the grease fully cool and dispose of properly in the garbage.
  • Overdoing the Drain Cleaners - Although drain cleaners are good for getting rid of clogs and residue, using too much of these types of products can often lead to more damage than good. The problem is that these commercial drain cleaners contain harsh chemicals to help break up a clog and if you overuse them, they can start to eat into the walls of the plumbing system. These types of cleaners can destroy metal and PVC piping.
  • Over Tightening Pipe Connections - When it comes to pipe fittings, you might think that the tighter is better, but this simply isn't true. Over tightening a pipe or elbow may crack the whole fitting. Over tightening a toilet bolt on the floor and you could crack the porcelain bowl and ruin the toilet completely.
  • Not Turning Off the Water - A majority of homeowners either forget to turn the water before doing any DIY plumbing repairs or plumbing installations. You can imagine the trouble this can cause, such as a full stream of water then flooding your bathroom, kitchen or elsewhere. Always remember to shut off the water prior to doing any plumbing work. Your best bet is to hire a fully licensed professional plumbing company to do the plumbing repairs for you. This will save you money and time.
